Mess

Mess

by Jo Devadason

1/
we look inside our heart for lost things:
lonely ball with no net
bottle emptied of water
arms which cannot hug
mermaid who has lost her legs
the sand under my feet slipping away
waves pulling me under

2/
when they say no
never let anyone
they only ask you for your number to prank us
Why?

3/
blackberry strawberries cake topped with raspberry cherry cookie pie apple cheesecake lemon upside down cake tart brookie tea flavoured cookies coconut sprinkles cupcakes
together we are strong

4/
rowing a solo boat
fishing alone
push monsters away in my dream
can I count on them?

5/
super power
change for the better
no doubts boiling up
rise above the noise in your head
no wrong answers
winds are calmer
I see the bright blue hoop

6/
what if lights stay on
what if words make us stop speaking
what if there wasn’t a cafe
what if I was born a boy
what if messes became messier
what if pranksters keeps on going
what if we were all rated “10”
what if we don’t have to do this alone
what if we could show some love

Every day I get unknown numbers trying to call on my mobile phone. I press the red button to hang up. When this happens, I feel annoyed and a little red in the face: Why do people do this? Why do they think it’s okay to do prank calls? Do they not know it might bother us? The only thing I can do now is hang up and ignore those calls. This following song inspired me to write the above poem.
